Short Answer
Place purge paper about 6 inches (152 mm) from each side of the weld joint to create a 12-inch (304 mm) purge chamber.
Details
Proper placement of purge paper is critical for effective gas coverage and clean welds.
For best results:
- Position purge paper evenly on both sides of the weld
- Maintain about 6" (152 mm) distance from the joint
- Create a sealed purge chamber around the weld area
This setup helps maintain consistent shielding gas coverage and prevents oxygen from entering the weld zone.
Avoid placing purge paper too close to:
- The heat-affected zone (HAZ)
- Grinding areas
- The weld root
Excess heat can cause the paper to char, which prevents it from dissolving properly and can lead to contamination.
Shop Tip
If purge paper is burning or turning black, it’s too close to the heat. Move it back and protect your purge chamber.
Bottom Line
Keep purge paper about 6" away from the weld on each side. Too close, and it will burn. Too far, and you lose control of your purge.
