Clean Setup = Clean Welds
The Problem
If your welds look dirty, weak, or inconsistent, it is usually not your machine.
It is contamination.
TIG welding is precise. Even small mistakes show up fast.
The Straight Answer
Clean everything.
- Clean metal
- Clean filler
- Clean gas
- Clean setup
That is how you get clean welds.
Step 1 — Start With Clean Material
A quality weld starts before you strike an arc.
Your joint needs to be:
- Smooth
- Clean
- Completely free of contamination
Remove anything that does not belong:
- Mill scale
- Dirt and dust
- Grease and oil
- Moisture
If it is on the metal, it is going in your weld.
Step 2 — Use the Right Tools (Do Not Mix Them)
This is where a lot of welders slip up.
One brush per material. No exceptions.
- Stainless → stainless-only brush
- Aluminum → aluminum-only brush
- Titanium → dedicated tools
- Carbon steel → separate tools
Mixing tools causes cross contamination.
Cross contamination leads to failed welds.
Step 3 — Clean It the Right Way
After grinding or cutting:
- Remove slag and residue
- Wipe everything down
Many shops use acetone, but there is a better option.

Never use chlorine-based cleaners.
Step 4 — Keep It Clean Until You Weld
Cleaning once is not enough.
If you are not welding right away:
- Cover the joint with paper or plastic
- Keep dust and moisture off
Recontamination happens fast.
Step 5 — Protect the Weld From Oxygen
Oxygen is one of the biggest reasons welds fail.
You need to protect:
- The weld puddle
- The heat-affected zone (HAZ)
- Sometimes the root side
Step 6 — Set Your Gas Up Right
Argon is your primary shielding gas.
In some cases, such as aluminum welding, helium can be added for more heat.
Check your system:
- Gas lines
- Fittings
- O-rings
- Torch seals
Use a simple soap and water test to check for leaks.
If bubbles grow, you have a leak.
More gas does not mean better welds.
Too much flow creates turbulence.
Turbulence pulls oxygen into the weld.
Set your flow correctly:
- Test on scrap first
- Adjust until coverage is stable
Step 7 — Improve Gas Coverage
Use a gas lens or flow straightener whenever possible.
- Smoother gas flow
- Better coverage
- Less contamination
Step 8 — Check Your Torch Setup
Poor torch components lead to poor welds.
Inspect:
- Cups
- Insulators
- Gaskets
- O-rings
Make sure everything fits correctly, is in good condition, and is not worn out.
Always use quality parts from a trusted source.
Step 9 — Use the Right Tungsten
Your tungsten controls your arc.
- 2% thoriated (traditional)
- 2% ceriated (non-radioactive)
- 2% lanthanated (best all-around)
Shop Rule:
Dirty tungsten leads to an unstable arc.
- Use high-quality electrodes
- Grind on a dedicated tungsten grinder

These are starting points. Always test and fine-tune.
Shop Tip
Most TIG problems do not start at the weld. They start with prep, gas, or tungsten.
